Boatswains Locker started in 1939, when the Orange County coastline was still largely undeveloped and had a relatively small boating community. Captain John Reckman opened a boatyard in Newport Beach, naming it "Boatswain's Locker" (pronounced "bosun") after the officer in charge of a ships' storage locker. The fledgling company began as one of the first businesses to service boats in the Newport Harbor area.
